On the 11th of January 2009, we along with over a hundred children celebrated the Self Help Community Center's grand opening!

SHCC was established by Sambath, a young determined Cambodian man, to give something back to the community he grew up in. The center provides educational, recreational and vocational opportunities to more than 200 rural children and young adults. Their aim is to empower the community with skills, education, care and support to break free from the poverty cycle.
The center teaches extra curricular studies concentrating on language skills, traditional cultural learning and organic farming methods. The sales of produce go back into the sustainability of the center.
In December two members of staff attended the Permaculture course run by the Singing Tree. This was made possible by HOPE funds.
The aim of the course was to learn new cultivation methods for the center's fruit and vegetable patch. During the course they learnt about composting, recycling and harvesting rain water. Primarily they were taught how to harvest rain water in the rainy season for use during the dry season.
They hope to build another community garden for the village and Sambath aims to teach 10 young men in his village, who cannot afford further education, what he has learnt to maintain the garden. He aims to give these young men an alternative in life offering training and a sustainable living from the produce.
