HOPE is happy to announce the funding of some sporty projects supporting the ‘Play’ element in our name. Which we believe is so important in the development of Cambodian Youth.
By supporting the Siem Reap Junior League two years in a row HOPE funds have been used to purchase eight sets of goal posts and by donating dozens of pairs of football socks which were kindly given to us by the Adidas shop in Siem Reap. When the football tournament is not running the goal posts have found homes in places like Anjali House so the kids can make the most of them.
Secondly, we also are very pleased to announce our recent sponsorship of the Angkor Empire Football Club having pledged $1000 (for two seasons) to cover ad hoc items like first aid kits, registrations fees, footballs, bibs, cones and very importantly drinking water during matches and training.
Angkor Empire FC play in Cambodia’s 1st division (not Cambodia’s main league). Their main criteria for the players are that they play good football, they are keen to train and they want to play. The team is a whole mix of backgrounds some from other projects we support, some from impoverished backgrounds, playing alongside others working in hotels, shops, market stall holders or still at school. There is no conflict, just one goal to play as a team and play football.
Their new tournament (aptly named the Siem Reap Domestic Tournament) starts this August and their results and progress are available to see on their facebook page (add link). They can also be seen regularly training between 3.30pm and 5.30pm behind Sofitel Hotel.
Their track record is good having played in the final for the last four years. They are very strict with their training and sensibly do not train two days before any big match to avoid injury or tiredness. We wish them all lots of luck in reaching the final this year.
